SW Cycling (Bikeability) Instructors

Meet the Instructors from across the South/South West that have formed a co-operative and share a vision ...
Now including .. Cycle Mechanics and MTB Trail Leaders and Instructors as well!!

The Introductions ...

Our aim is to work in partnership as part of a team, supporting and helping each other by sharing our own experiences.  We all bring very different but complimentary skills to the table which makes for a wonderful working relationship - At the end of the day we all want the same thing, that being to get cycle training back out into the public domain again, with no exceptions!

Michele Radant  is a mum and grandmother who has always had an interest in exercise, but had steered clear of cycling because it’s her husband’s sport.  It was only 10 years ago when she was told that she must give up weight bearing exercise because of joint problems that she took up cycling on the advice of her doctor.  Michele joined the CTC and loved it, riding with them regularly and the Torbay Section have just registered her as a ride leader.  She and her husband also have a tandem rode from Lands End to John O’Groats on it along with other events.  At the beginning of 2010 Michele left her job with the Local Authority and concentrated on the thing she loves most and trained as a National Standard  Instructor and a British Cycling Level 1 Coach.  She plans on doing her British Cycling Level 2 Coaching certificate and training as a National Standard Instructor Trainer later in the year.  To contact her call on 07974 651543 or email michele3@btinternet.com

Helen Truscott is Cornwall's very first National Standard Assistant (Cycling) Instructor but hopefully will be able to complete the journey and become a fully qualified National Standard Instructor in the not too distant future, by completing her training and doing the last two days of the course.  Helen is a Teaching Assistant at Whitemoor Primary as well as a Brownie Guider but unfortunately she had other commitments the second weekend of training that she was unable to postpone.  Helen first came into contact with Bikeability when she acted as the support worker to go out with a fully qualified instructor and seemed to enjoy it.  She is fortunate enough to have a head teacher who fully supports the idea of her training as an instructor so booked onto the course.  The main difference between a Nat. Standards Assistant Instructor (NSAI) and a Nat. Standards Instructor (NSI) is that the NSAI works WITH an NSI in every way but the NSI assumes full responsibility during any courses they run together.  The other main difference is that an NSAI is only trained to deliver Levels 1 and 2 of the three levels however there is a bridging programme being written so that NSAIs do have the option to upgrade.

Alyn Curtis like Simon Anderson-Jones are both Teaching Assistants at Newquay Juniors Academy.  Newquay Juniors have been involved with Bikeability since the 'gearing up' period and has consistently been running courses throughout the year, not only Level 1 courses after school for Ys 3 and 4 but Level 2 courses for the Y 5s and 6s and must on average, train over 100 children per academic year, with the help and support of their headmaster and one of the Y3 teachers who initiated it all back in 2006.  Although there are two trained instructors within the school itself, they still work with the original instructor who has been going in since the beginning as very often only one of them is available yet there will between 10 and 12 children on any one course and there are at least two Level 2 courses a term.  However the Bikeability 'good practice' ratio is 1 instructor to 6 children, hence the need for another instructor.  However futuristically, the school may well take over the running of their Level 1 courses and as other schools are asking about After School Cycling Clubs, perhaps it is just as well.

Harriet Trubshaw and Tom Christensen both gained their FdSc Outdoor Education through Uni. of Plymouth last year and are now converting it into a BSc in Sports Performance and Coaching.  Their plan is to move from Falmouth to Cumbria and start their own business.  Harriet has at last achieved her objective before the bursary went.  Previously because of the cost of equipment she needed for her original degree, sadly it made it prohibitive.  Tom used to do a lot of BMX cycling in years gone by so again, wanted to train as an instructor and given how frequently end to enders pass through inspiring others to get out and about, what better skill for them to take with them in the fullness of time, if not to offer cycling as well as sailing .. surely that will mean there will not only be something for everyone but on both land and water!  What a great idea! Their respective email addresses are on the home page & they are listed under Falmouth ..

Marcus Noon works with youngsters through Connexions with VocationUK and is really more of an IT expert.  In the past he has worked with Sustrans as well, working on the cycle routes so wanted to be able to work with the local Bike It Officer to encourage children to cycle more in schools, in his spare time as currently the local county council have not embraced Bikeability but are still continuing with the old fashioned Cycling Proficiency.  The main difference is that Bikeability does not have restrictions in terms of age therefore children from any years at school can be engaged in cycling activities and Y5s are able to also go out on road and train at Level 2, on the proviso that their bikes skills are such that they are able to maintain control in real traffic conditions.  Marcus again came to train as a result of encouragement from another instructor in the form of Vin Cox, the current reigning Guinness World Record Holder for the fastest circumnavigation of the world by bicycle.  He can be contacted via marcus@vocationuk.co.uk

Felicia Sheingold decided to train as she is also interested in disabled cycling, coming into Cornwall in the form of Cycleability with the launch in March 2011.  Also as a mum, she is only to aware of the lack of training available to children and likes how Bikeability has three levels, beginning in the playground and progressing onto quieter roads to be able to cycle to school or work (now it is no longer just for children but open to anyone, old or young alike) before being able to take on bigger and more challenging journeys.  Felicia does a lot of cycling with her partner who would go out to Australia and the US when his friend Vin Cox, another local instructor was going for the RTW cycling record and would accompany him for the odd few hundred miles here and there.  Felicia's work revolves around health and the benefits of exercise, particularly for those recovering for example from strokes and she works with charities like Headway for precisely that reason, offering courses in various forms of activities from Nordic walking to cycling.  Felicia can be contacted via email at felicia@activatehealth.co.uk

Chris Opie was born and eductated in Cornwall yet as an elite athlete who can cycle at some serious speeds, he certainly does not conform to being someone who will do things 'dreckly'.  In the late 1990's Chirs broke his leg having just learned to ride a bike and did not want anything to do with two wheels again but by aged 10, he competing mostly in the southwest but also in Wales and Manchester.  Skip forwards a couple of years and Chris competed in his first international race representing the British Schools Cycling Association team in Holland, during a week long series of races for under 15 cyclists from around Europe. In 2003 saw him represent Great Britain at the Youth Olympic Games, where he was placed 6th in a field of 96 riders, again a successful result on the international scene. 2005 which saw him compete and lead the National Junior series in Britain but despite this, was not selected to represent Great Britain at the World or European Championships.  In 2008 Chris made a personal comeback and achieved a feat that had escaped him for 3 years., to win a race at the highest amateur level, standing on the podium flanked by 2 professional cyclists! The season was a steep learning curve and in August had a career highlight, to win a 'stage' in the biggest race he had ever competed in (Ronde van de Provincie Antwerpen).  However now he has trained as a National Standards (Cycling) Instructor as well as still spending time cycling competitively. so he can help others to enjoy cycling too and be safe doing so.  Chris can be contacted via email at speedy_opie@hotmail.com

Fiona Telfer-Brunton joins Rob and Wendy as a graduate in Sports Science at Plymouth University but to her credit, she also took the British Cycling 2009 SW Coach of the Year Award along side other coaches such as Mark Barry from Yorkshire, who is a former Olympian and Commonwealth squad member.  She was also nominated for Cornwall Sports Partnership Participation Coach of the Year 2010.  In addition, Fi was Team Coach for the SW Road and Time Trials at the UK School Games 2010 in Newcastle and three weeks later, Team Manager for the SW team at the Inter-Regional Championships in Newport.  Given how as yet the SW does not have it's own track as yet although another instructor is campaigning to get one down here, they did well with her encouragement having never done track cycling before.  She is the senior coach with One and All based at Bissoe as well as Youth Coach and Women’s Team Manager.  Fi has just qualified as a National Standard Cycling Instructor as well so she can now deliver Bikeability to compliment her other skills.  She can be contacted via email at fiona@f1coaching.co.uk and has a website at www.f1coaching.co.uk - the photo is of Fi with Victoria Pendleton at the British Cycling Awards Dinner in March 2010.

Sam Cann was part of the original pilot of Bikeability from the autumn of 2006 through to and including March 2007 with Cycle Exeter, along with Amy O'Loughlin et al., and she has also been accredited as an Instructor Trainer by the CTC.  There are no limits to Sam's talents and knowledge, she is the Chairwoman of Exeter Mountain Bike Club, her family are also involved.  Indeed, Sam and her family, including the children rode the End to End from John O'Groats to Lands End a few years back probably earning her son the title of the youngest person to ever cycle the E2E as he was about 7 at the time.  Other accolades that Sam can claim it as a British Cycling 'B' class Commissaire at competitive events.  Like all of the instructors she is also a trained First Aider and now does a lot of work cycling with her daughter, as well these days .. and is involved in the running of events in places like Haldon Forest., now where better to go to get muddy and have some good healthy fun?  Sam can be contacted via the www.embc.uk.net or email given on the home page.

Tom Pales is based in Exmouth but like Robin, Wendy and Felicia is passionate about setting up an All Inclusive Cycling Club in the SW.  Tom is also a CTC Cycling Ambassador.  He is currently just one essay away from getting his Sports Physiotherapy degree but already has his BSc (Hons) Sports Science and just landed his first NHS contract to work with a client who has head injuries.  He will be working together with Robin Camps and the Cornwall Sports Partnership during the winter months writing grant applications for the Cycleability project that we hope will also go across the border.  His website is www.freetrike.co.uk , his email is also listed on the Home page together with his mobile number.  And in case you are wondering, Tom is gentle giant in the photo .. he truly is the gentle giant at about 6'6" plus .. Zsolts, whom he is giving a piggy back to, is Project Manager for cycling for Exeter & Devon County Council.  Both are avid cyclists and Tom's most recent claim to fame was doing the 4th leg of the Tour of Britain from Minehead to Teignmouth in a recumbent but unlike the professionals, took 11 hours!  He was a little disappointed that the finish line had almost been completely dismantled by the time he got there ..

Dougie Bruce works for Cornwall Council as an OEC at Delaware Outdoor Education Centre, which caters for students with disabilities in mainstream schools.  He and his staff are MIAS qualified MBT instructors and like most of us, want to open cycling up to the disabled.  However given their location on the edge of both Dartmoor (give or take a few miles) and Bodmin Moor (ditto), it's not wholly surprising that they are going for the off road version of bikes for people who have disabilities.  Of course Dougie's talents are not just in cycling, he is also an Outdoor Education Sports Coach and involved with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme as well as orienteering etc.  To contact Dougie, it is probably best to email him at delaware@cornwall.gov.uk and for more information about the Delaware Centre itself, go to www.cornwall.gov.uk and search for Delaware Outdoor Centre for more detailed information about the facility.  Dougie is not the only MTB/MIAS qualified instructor there, there are several others as well so if he is not there, perhaps one of the others can help you instead ..

Gary Moger is the latest person with cycling at heart to swell our ranks but from a different angle.  Gary is one of the most highly qualified Bike Mechanics you can get and we are so lucky to have him locally.  At Revolve they are committed to all things bicycle and the joy of riding them. They have over twenty years experience in the bicycle industry from managing workshops, setting up recycling projects to working for bicycle companies like Kona. Whether it is a full-suspension MTB race set up, the latest race kit, or a recycled Claud Butler from the eighties, they have the experience to help. Primarily they aim to offer expert professional advice and service to encourage cycling at all levels, whether that is a simple repair, stripping a bike back totally or running 4 hour or 2 day maintenance courses for you to learn how to do it yourself. Revolve also has worked with Cycle Systems Academy, based in London, teaching their first courses in professional bicycle mechanics, and helping them become City & Guilds accredited. Based in Devoran, his website is www.revolvebicycleworks.com

Louise Summers is the latest instructor to qualify together with Simon Anderson Jones, their both having trained on the same course in the autumn.  Louise is is a qualified secondary school teacher (P.G.C.E.) with over twenty years experience of working with youth and community groups in Cornwall, London and the West Midlands. She holds a full motorcycle license, is a Sustrans volunteer ranger and enjoys cycling on the cycle network as it takes her family to lovely places they couldn't see by foot or car and has a website, www.cyclesmiles.org.uk - Simon or AJ as he is better known, is a Teaching Assistant at a primary school in Newquay and recently had an article written about him by the local paper, with the headline of 'Teacher is the wheel deal'.  He is very popular with the children and both of them are parents of young children themselves so feel it is important for them to learn the right skills to be able to not only cycle but cycle safely.

Wendy Creed is a mum of two who have just been let loose on the real world – they are the reason she started teaching as they themselves missed out due to a lack of instructors., that was back in the (very) late 90’s and again in 2001.  At that point in time National Standards, was only on the drawing board but not yet in place.  During the original Bikeability pilot, she was approached about becoming an Instructor Trainer as well.  She is currently doing her training as a National Standard Instructor Trainer  working it in around Uni etc. which also formed part of her Work Based Learning on her Sports Coaching and Therapy degree course.  She also volunteers at the UK School Games which had cycling as one of the disciplines for the first time in 2009 and a British Cycling Coach as a result and has since also trained as a Level 2 Track Coach.

Eric van der Horst has a (life) long history of cycling.  He grew up in Holland with cycling as a natural means of transport. As a young man he explored most of Western Europe by bicycle and also cycled coast to coast in Australia and the United States. Besides being a Cycling Instructor Eric works as Cycle Route Surveyor and Consultant for mapping companies and town councils.  He also writes (guide) books about cycling and together with his wife Dawn he runs his own cycling holiday company. For Bikeability please check www.eoscycletraining.350.com/home.htm.  He moved from The Netherlands to the UK in 2007 and since then has been an ambassador of his home country's most original export product: CYCLING! The Netherlands has the highest rate of cycling participation in day to day traffic of Europe and a mind boggling network of dedicated cycle paths. It is his personal goal to improve the situation for cyclists in the UK as much as possible.

Originally from Northern Ireland, Dawn Connor van der Horst is a National Standard Bikeability cycling instructor, supplying North Devon with the EOS Cycle Training Bikeability scheme together with her husband Eric, whose passion for cycling she has whole heartedly adopted.. Dawn remembers the freedom cycling gave her as a child and wants to make sure the new generation also appreciates all that cycling can do for them. For Bikeability please check www.eoscycletraining.350.com/home.htm  Together with her husband she also runs her own cycling holiday company, offering cycling holidays in the UK and The Netherlands. She also likes to go out for nice rides in the countryside - in this way she has proven to be the ideal person to test the products of EOS Cycling Holidays! Above all, she keeps the company running with her project management skills and her commitment to ensure everything runs smoothly!

Charlie Allen has been a cycling instructor for a very long time and was originally involved with CTUK, who were one of the first organisations involved in the early stages of the development of the National Standards Criteria and the first to implement it as National Standards so knows his onions.  Better still, he has also been involved in the 'Wheels for All' project in Croydon and Sutton and is going to help us set up the Cornish Wheels for All Centre as well.  Charlie is also although experienced in BMX and MTB cycling, looking to get his CTC accreditation as an MTB/Off Road Instructor as well.  His wife is a local girl from Penzance which is where he will be based and will have two web sites as when he gets himself sorted out,  one to reflect the mechanical side of things and will be www.drbike.co.uk and the other will be www.arenacycling.co.uk - meanwhile both are linked to his email so that anyone interested in contacting him, has a way of doing so!

Alan Lukehurst is a retired PE Teacher and Play Provider who lives and works in the South Hams. A keen cyclist he decided to train as a NCI and qualified in March 2009. Alan works for the SSP, Devon County Council.  Alan has been the 'administrator' for POSH (Pedal Bashers of the South Hams) for a number of years organising 'social' rides fortnightly and camping holidays over weekends or for a week's holiday in France and England for adults, and children, of varied abilities.  In 2005/6 Alan & Annie, his wife, cycled and camped their way over 10,000 miles  from Spain to New Zealand ... including a few air flights over the major sea areas!! You can contact Alan via email at alan.lukehurst@tiscali.co.uk

Matt Wilmott is based north of St Austell and teaches in St Blazey.   Professionally he is an ASD teacher who takes the more able children he is responsible for, on the Sustrans cycle paths around Eden most weeks.  His students get a huge joy from these cycling sessions which boosts their self-esteem as well as fitness.   His training now empowers him to open up cycling to the lesser abled students on school premises in the playground as well, which is his Plan A.  Plan B is to do further training as a ride leader when we get the Kernow Wheels for All project off the ground, when his experience working at Doubletrees will prove to be invaluable and someone we can all look to for help and guidance., in fact in that respect, he already is!  Bill, myself and several other instructors in county are all planning to work with him at some point in the future for precisely that reason.  Matt’s contact is matt@swcycleinstructors.info

Dave Cuffwright is one of the original 100 National Standard Instructors to ever have been trained up back in 2004 - 5 years later, due to circumstances beyond his control, he is still involved in cycling however it is now as a ride leader for Mobilise, [formerly 'Pedal Back the Years'] .. Historically he has always worked with Mount Hawke Primary School, as his own children went there once upon a time but now he also leads two rides a week for the Primary Care Trust who run the Mobilise Project, both of which are along various parts of the Coast to Coast trail - one from Bissoe Bike Chain Cycle Hire to Devoran along the east end of the Coast to Coast trail and the other from the Bike Barn in Cambrose to Portreath.  It is something he enjoys doing and better still, it means that he does not have to get the car out at all as he is easily able to cycle to both locations!  Also when the Company of Cyclists were running Cornwall's Festival of Cycling, he would also be involved in both the road shows and going into the schools doing demonstrations as well as instructing, as they would always used any available and suitably qualified instructors in the early years.

Robin is a Bikeability Trainer with family connections in mid Cornwall, delivering to families, individuals and schools.  He can also deliver Basic Cycle Maintenance skill courses in terms of those things that stop you from riding your bike, anything more technical then it is time for a visit to a bike shop.  He's also a First Aid Trainer.  The ITC syllabus covers the essential first aid priorities, however after those priorities we put First Aid into context for the the First Aider E.G. taking typical cycling accident scenarios and how to manage them.  He delivers the standard Emergency First Aid at Work, First Aid at Work, but also have courses that are more specific such as Sports First Aid (including "return to play decisions"), Outdoor First Aid, and Paediatric First Aid. He also is a DofE Supervisor/Assessor and Communication and Team Building Facilitator would be available for D of E Bronze & Silver assessments, Team building challenges, Charity treks or cycle rides. Robin's email is robincamps@yahoo.co.uk

Steve Masi is based in Hayle and already has his own business, ‘Wheels on Wheels’, a mobile cycle repair workshop which he already goes into schools to train the youngsters to mend punctures etc. but decided now is the time to add to that portfolio and train as a National Standards Instructor as well.  In addition, he is also looking to gain his Bikeability accredited.  Furthermore he has now done his CTC/OTC Mountain Bike Instructors course as well as he regularly works with children who need to burn off some surplus energy which would otherwise get them into big trouble.  Steve can be contacted via s.masi@wowcycletraining.org.uk - BTW, his nickname, because of his helmet, is 'Mohican Man' or at least, that is what all the children he has worked with call him!!  He now has his own website at www.wowcycletraining.org.uk - WoW as in Wheels on Wheels because of his being a cycle mechanic but heck, it looks still good and now he is an all rounder having qualified as an off road instructor as well

Martyn Laxton is from Devon, born and bred (some say thick in the arm and thick in the 'ed .. his words not mine though!)  Finally he is in a position to do something for his local community in terms of putting something back.  Having coached and trained all ages during his working life, primarily water sports and taking friends' children up to Haldon Forest mountain biking (way before the new tracks arrived when part of the fun was getting lost in the forest) as well as being in and been around the licensed trade, he's a fair all rounder. He has two teenagers who do have bikes, now it is just a question of getting his wife out on one .. good practice there for you Martyn!! He recently qualified as an NSI and trained as an MTB Instructor with CTC/OTC as well.  He got thrown in the deep end metaphorically speaking, when in the wake of Ken's accident, he worked with Steve down at Plymouth Hoe and got his feet wet for the first time!  To contact him, his email addy is swervymervy@msn.com

Bill Ward comes from Penzance, which is still his home town., he's also hoping to become a 2nd year FdSc Outdoor Education student at Truro College, based at Tregye.  His aim is to set up his own business when he is suitably qualified in a variety of sports but as a means of getting from A to B, what better mode of transport which is both healthy and environmentally friendly, than cycling.  He can be contacted via email at BillyWard@mindless.com.  Bill wants to go on and get more experience working with foundation students, so plans on working with Matt Wilmott, at his invitation as well.  He can offer training in his home town of Penzance at weekends or Truro during the week after school hours and has worked with me on the LEAPActive week as well as with children who are home educated in Penzance.

Jon Williams lives between Liskeard and Falmouth and hopefully will be going into his 2nd year as an FdSc Sports Science and Injury Management student, and of course, with cycling, being non weight bearing, is a wonderful form of rehabilitation.  Not everyone knows how to cycle., you’d be surprised how many adults are now learning to do so for the first time …… Jon can be contacted via Jon@CornwallCyclingSafety.org.uk. He is also hoping to do his CTC Mountain Bike Instructors course in the autumn, meanwhile we are working our socks off together in Cornwall and just across the border in Devon on the edge of Dartmoor.  His webby is www.CornwallCyclingSafety.org.uk but once again, we need the boss's help and right now, he is elsewhere in the world but keep an eye, the background will change, watch this space ..

Rob Cockings now lives in Probus but remembers St Mewan Primary School well, having attended it as a child.  He is now a mature student in his second year of his FdSc Personal Trainer degree, hoping to go into his third year and upgrading it to a BSc (Hons) from an FdSc.    Needless to say that he too goes to Truro College, is a keen cyclist and athlete himself and has been for many years.  Rob can be contacted via gettheredreckly@hotmail.co.uk when he is not running a cross country training session for pupils at Probus CP.  He's also an experienced marathon runner and heavily involved with Truro Running Club where he is also assistant coach to help to mentor new members, who are very often starting to run from scratch.

Karen Westbrook is the face behind Frills Driving School from Grampound., she was also a Cyclewise Instructor in the dim, distant pass but recognises that cycling will be the way forward, so embraces Bikeability whole heartedly.  She has instructed both my two and although my youngest still has to go for his test, my daughter passed first time which says it all.  Now Karen is ‘thinking Bike’ as well as car (her driving school is still active) and having worked with her, the way she give constructive feedback as well as encourages and praises, will help to spur people onwards and upwards.  Karen works in conjunction with Rob Cockings, in fact they have taken on the Roseland together living on the doorstep and working in tandem so Karen can contacted via karen@frillstuition.org.uk, her website needless to say, is www.frillstuition.org.uk.

Martin Burrow's CV revolves almost exclusively around cycling and Andrew and I are now in the throes of doing our own training with Cycle Experience as Instructor Trainers who will then be able to mentor new instructors as well as training those who wish to work with us, as both fully fledged National Standard Instructors and Assistant Instructors.  He's also a National Standards Instructor, British Cycling Coach, Tutor and Assessor as well as being an X-Bike (Spinning) Instructor - is there no end to his talent one asks!?  His webby is www.southdevoncycletraining.co.uk and he and Andrew both live just a few miles from each other in Torbay (Martin is based in Torquay) - so if one of them isn't available (Martin tends to travel all over the country instructing and coaching), hopefully the other one will be!

Andrew Holdstock lives in Totnes and professionally, is a Maths Teacher as well as having qualified as an NSI himself .. a novel way to have extra maths tuition perhaps??  He and his wife (another Wendy) have a caravan down in Portscatho and we work together if I'm running a course when he comes down just as I go to Dartington to help him when he takes his class out on a field trip if I am available.  Andrew's webby when it is set up, will be www.alwaysbecycling.org.uk which will become a cycling blog.  We've both found that working with each other on each others home territory, we can learn from each other as it helps us to broaden our own outlook given both locations have very different features, which makes us think more and hopefully improves the quality of service we offer.  It underpins why local knowledge is all important in planning sessions, especially route planning for those wishing to cycle to school/college and/or work.

Penny Allen was the first independent instructor to swell the ranks from just across the Tamar, in Plymouth to be more accurate although she teaches in the Saltash area as well ….. she isn’t just a former primary school teacher but specialises in sport and fitness coaching!!  When we met for the first time she told me that it was when like myself, she was looking for cycle training for her youngest, she couldn't find anyone to train her which when she realised there was a need for it in Plymouth. She has been working with the Callington Sports Partnership delivering cycle training to primary schools, and is hoping to develop more training in Plymouth schools in the future. Penny is a keen road cyclist, and if at all possible always try and cycle to wherever she is delivering training.  Check out Penny's website at www.penactive.com

Dave Cross worked with Roj at the Bike Barn - we have met briefly before but our acquaintance was renewed last year at Cornwall's Festival of Cycling as he was asked to tell people about the new trails given how the Bike Barn is right on the edge of most of them, whilst we were there (unofficially) representing the SW Instructors.  He is both an MTB and Nat. Standards Instructor but amazingly learned to cycle on a unicycle almost within an hour., his sense of balance is fantastic .. the pic was taken in Pz when he tried to play hockey on a unicycle and for a while, succeeded!!  Dave also works with Penwith SSP as an instructor and is probably their most senior and experienced instructor.

Amy O'Loughlin also formerly known as  Lily-Peds, is a young lady from Exeter who operated a cycle rickshaw for which Ames, as Head Peddler had got her licence to carry passengers until the new ruling came in so for a while offered a green alternative to transportation, proms, school runs, birthday rides etc … you name it, she's peddled it and have also branched out to offer those who want to do the pedaling themselves as a sustainable option.  As a fellow Bikeability Instructor she can also offer up to date training for all ages and all abilities in Cycle Training through Cycle Exeter and you can contact her via email via the link above when she is not studying in London towards her degree .. sadly that is not so very often.

Mark Trebilcock has been involved in the water sports industry for 25 years running a successful centre on the River Fal.  During that time his RYA recognised centre ran sailing, windsurfing, power boating, kayaking & associated courses.  All ages & abilities were catered for, tuition ranged from whetting a 5yr olds appetite for the water to running instructor training courses.  He is also still involved in organising sporting events & most weeks can be found around the south west competing in running, swimming, biking & triathlon events.  Having now trained as an NSI, Mark intends using his teaching skills to promote cycling, develop skills & a healthy approach to life.  He is Feock based and can be reached via: cycleacademy@hotmail.com or on his mobile @ 077915 47309.

Jodi Vickery is based in Bude.  Her background is more of a competitive nature having been the National Ladies Master Cross Country Mountain Bike Champion in 2006.  She is also a National Standards (On Road) Instructor as well as a British Cycling Coach which is more of a competitive nature with training both off road and on.  Mountain Biking has always been her first love and she is always happiest when coaching in preparation for it but that involves road work as well because of training the body to cope, so progressively increasing activity level.  It is another reason why it is good to do the Fit2Ride spinning classes as they teach you various body positions such as climbs and jumps as well as simulated cycle exercise which is all done to music, providing a fun & social alternative to standard exercise.  Maybe you are training for a specific event/goal, or just simply want to get fit and lose weight. Jodi can also help you with individual weekly written training programmes to suit your requirements.

We also now have links to the Cornwall MTB Club who are affiliated to the CTC ... check out their website - They are a friendly bunch of bikers and justifiably proud of their easy going, relaxed attitude which makes their club what it is.  They always do their best to make everyone feel welcome and have members of all levels, young and old, no one is left out. They've built up both their club and reputation over time, so go along and be part of their up and coming group.  They're located around the Truro area and ride at various locations each week with the rides being set by a different group member each week, which keeps the riding style varied and interesting. They meet each Sunday at the time and location displayed on the 'Meet Sheet'.
